The world's first fish farm cage made from 100% recycled plastic has been launched on the Helgeland coast! The fish farming cage is made from recycled plastic from old, discarded fish farming cages, and is the result of the project "Fish farming cages made from recycled plastic", which we are part of in collaboration with AKVA group, Helgeland Plast and Plasto. The aim of the project is to develop and test cages and sub-components consisting solely of recycled plastic material to show that the quality is good, and that such a product can be certified and sold in the same way as a cage made of virgin plastic. The project is supported by the Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund and SkatteFUNN.
Our role as a partner in the project is mainly the delivery of recycled plastic granulate. We have ground and melted down the decommissioned cages into new plastic granulate. In addition, we have worked closely with Norner on the addition of additives to increase the quality of the recycled plastic, before sending it on to AKVA group, Helgeland Plast and Plasto for the production of new components. In addition to this, we have actively assisted with knowledge and ideas along the way.
Last week, a group of us from Oceanize traveled out to Nova Sea's Varpet site outside Mo i Rana to see the cage with our own eyes. The fact that we have succeeded in producing a certified farmed cage from discarded farmed cages is a major milestone, not only for us, but for the entire industry. This project proves that our recycled plastic is of good quality and that plastic materials can often be used in multiple life cycles. In other words, this is a big step in the right direction towards the green shift with increased focus on recycling and circular economy.
Farming cages are major plastic components in the aquaculture industry. For example, this cage consists of 30 tons of recycled plastic from us, while a shopping cart contains about 0.8 kg of plastic. Every contribution helps, but it is clearly profitable to achieve good solutions for the larger plastic components. Oceanize will therefore continuously work for increased reuse and recycling of plastic waste so that some of the virgin plastic produced today can be replaced with recycled plastic.
